Yes a bit more expensive at a little over £300 but I wanted the dogbox and wheels etc. Plenty of padding and a really good fit with cut outs etc for air flow. Well worth the extra IMHO

Although mine was a custom design the option with the dog box and wheels is now available as part of their standard range. Bit more expensive though.

Can someone confirm that when you solo a bus send with solo set to post fader you can only hear the effect of an inserted graphic if the insert is set to pre. When the insert is set to post you can't hear the effect which, as the little diagram on the display shows the insert is still pre fader but post eq, seems wrong.

Love the desk though!

OK so here is my next question to you recording types. I often end up overdubbing to the tune of 26-30 tracks.

For examples sake, let me present the following scenario. Let’s say I am working on a song that will have 32 total tracks to be mixed down. Being that I/O is assigned in 8 channel blocks, how would I set up the X32 routing so that I could record overdubs and still hear the playback once I got above 24 tracks? I know I could subgroup in my DAW and just route to the first 24 of the X32, but that is a minor pain in the butt having to go back and re-route the X32 and the outputs of the DAW. Just wondering if I was missing something to where I could assign the some of the pre-amps to the Auxs for input into the daw, and then use 1-32 as returns from the card for mixdown without having to re-route anything while I work. If I can do this, I may be happy indeed.

Hi Rob,

This should work:
Step 1: You can route 4 mic pres amps to Aux channels 1 - 4.
Step 2: You would assign the Aux inputs which are being feet by the 4 mic pre amps, (you assigned in step 1), as your card output. You assign this with the, "Aux 1-6 and Mon", in the routing screen.


If you need more than 4 mic press for overdubbing, the most common thing is to just take your Left Right Master Bus, (Usually output 1/2), in your daw and return it on 2 X32 channels.

Thought you might like to see the flightcase I just had made in the UK by Flightcase Warehouse. Excellent quality.

In total agreement Nick. I had a 150mm dog leg. Well worth it! Mine came last Tuesday.
Mine was £200 with about £15 delivery from the same place. Looks like I grabbed a quick bargain before the rush on these and the price increase!

hey steve,

i'm aware of that posting but i think it's a different noise.

the general noise level of channel 16+32 is the same as with the other channels but 16+32 have a very slight 6k+12k sine - all in all none of a problem.

the phones out and the aux-ins are more affected - i recorded it (http://www.floxbox.net/stuff/X32.wav - first everything muted, then phones volume, then aux-ins unmuted) and posted a pic of the analyser.
to some people this might seem none of a problem, having had a tinnitus for quite some years i'm kinda sensitive to this noise

Hi Flo,

I have the same problem as you concerning the headphone output. I get this high pitch sine wave, even when I mute EVERYTHING. Did Behringer tell you what was causing it? I have very sensitive ears and I can hear that through my Bose headphones and it bothers me since I have to use headphones often. Did Behringer tell you what is causing this?

Here's the way we do it:

We route all 32 channels of the console to the card outputs (feeding the DAW).
We route card inputs 1-4 (from the DAW) to the first 4 AUX inputs. We link the first two Aux inputs as a stereo pair.
We assign the DAW main L & R output to card 1 & 2 (feeds console AUX 1 & 2 inputs)
We assign the DAW metronome to card 3 (feeds console Aux 3 input)
All of the above routing always stays the same. We never have to change it.

So first, lets say we record the rhythm section (up to 32 tracks at once). We bring up all the channels being recorded (as well as AUX 3 if the band needs to hear the DAW metronome).
Next, using the DAW, we rough mix the rhythm section tracks.
When we're ready to do overdubs, we bring up the AUX 1/2 stereo pair (from the DAW main L & R) and the channel(s) we're using for the overdubs.

Put another way, we only use the console for recording and developing headphone mixes. We never use it for mixing down recorded tracks. We only use the DAW for that.

Again, this is only the way we do it. For sure it's not the only way.

As long as I can use the onboard pres to get sound into the daw and keep 32 channels returning from the daw to the board at the same time, I don't care if it is auxs, mains or mules that gets me there. It is something I have lamented with my Yamaha for the past 8 or so years. Yea, I can do 32 channels of mixdown, but not if I want to re-take something and see how it translates against more than 24 tracks. I am getting closer and closer to pulling the X32 trigger every day.

I want to do just the opposite of what you are talking about. I want to be able to use 32 channels at once to mix. I can not stand "in the box" mixing. I know I may even give up a little sonic quality by doing so, but I believe the speed, creativity and musicality I preserve by mixing with a board outweighs any sonic gain I might find by staying in the daw. I find I often fall into the trap of mixing visually while working in the daw and I tend to use my ears more when I am working a board.

Not to say you can't be creative or do good mixes in the box, but I'm 45 years old and over 25 years into mixing, some tricks are best performed by the old dog if you just let him do what he knows best.

Hi Rob,
I wanted to correct one part of my post above:

On step 2, you do not need to assign AUX-Mon to the card, just leave Local 1-8, the card will then take the Direct Out from the Mic Pre as always but you will have control over them at the Aux Channel.

I have to say, the Mix Bus in the X32 actually sounds really good. I think better than many DAW Mix Busses I have mixed with, plus you get a full channel strip on every channel, (no DSP juggling), and a full buss section to use for bus compression.

And best of all it is nice to be out of the box and onto the board!

I get the exact same thing and I was just wondering if it was isolated or if everyone had the same problem. Every other outputs on the board are very clean but I get this small annoying noise from both the headphone and the monitor output. Any news fromBehringer on this?

I might be talking out of the wrong orifice now, but I have a vague memory of being able to record from the pres and return on the same channels from the daw, in effect having the interface as an insert on every channel, but I might be talking absolute crap.

Had a show tonight that reminded me that I'm still a "DC3 pilot" flying an "Airbus". First I got totally lost getting the effects to sound, the problem was simple enough once I identified it. Then after soundcheck saved the setting and left the console on with everything muted. Had a clicking noise from an appliance in the building presumably, but replaced a cable that I suspected was dodgy just in case.
Came back for the show and did a quick listen with some background music, and total silence!!!!!
Pushed the faders up high but nothing, checked a few things on the console, recalled the saved scene, tried again, double checked the cable I had changed, checked that the house PA was indeed on and that it hadn't been turned down or my input had been messed with, nothing. Power down and back up again, recalling intermediate scenes, recalling final scene, nothing, show starting, I finally notice that all mono sends are at -inf and the mono selector on every track is black, frantically turning every channel up to zero and activating, and wonders of all wonders, we have sound!!!!
Yes, I was using mono main sending to matix, having the mono dependant on the stereo main so I could set overall target level with the mono main fader and have the steroe main fader for full travel operation during the show, and probably did something the hard way, but I haven't been able to figure out what happened between soundcheck and showtime. Time for forensics, the great thing with the scenes on a stick is that I can sit down in front of the PC and study the "Black Box" that is the USB stick in my pocket. :razz:
This old "DC3 pilot" didn't crash the "Airbus", but he sure came close :blush:

i didn't get any response from behringer yet and i think if it would be a general issue we'd have read about it a lot more here.
the problem is there's no support here in austria, just in germany. i'd have to get the console 1000km to germany, so it'd be nice if you could keep me updated how your local support reacts to the problem and if it gets solved.

Hi,

I have the same noise - it's terrible - and it seems inherent to the desk as I changed my X32 for another because of it - with identical results. It's there regardless of what's muted etc - I'm tipping it's digital artefacts from the effects or something as theres a hint of modulation in it. It's in the monitor outputs as well. If anyone finds a fix - please let me know.

OK, here's a gig report.

Tribute band (24 channels of mics and instruments).
Small venue (120 punters)

Setup.
Soooo much easier than last time I was here (with a Yamaha MG32/14FX and rack of processing).
No gates to cross patch, no external FX or CD players to hook up.
That alone saved half an hour of wrangling snakes.
The P16 monitoring system was easy to put together, although CAT5 cable is a bugger to uncoil (I used Belkin cable. Is there a CAT5 cable with the coiling properties of mic cable?).
Hooked up a laptop wirelessly to use the XCtontrol software. No problems encountered.
Also connected the laptop using USB from the XUF card for recording into Cubase (in a rehearsal I found that connecting with the ethernet and USB to the same laptop could create an audible ground loop; possibly due to the wiring of the room, but I didn't want to take the chance at the gig).

The soundcheck went OK. The band got used to the P16s quite quickly. The singer loved the flexibility.

The gig.
The desk worked flawlessly. I used a cheap MP3 player as playback instead of a CD player, so that I could record a 2 track to an onboard attached USB stick.
Overall I was happy at the way the desk worked and the way that it sounded.
The 2 track recording sounds noticable better than recordings made from my previous desks.

Comments/observations
What would have made my life easier would have been vertical channel linking rather than horizontal.
Having some sort of FBD identification on the master bus graphic EQ would have been handy (had it on my FBQ3102) but not essential. However I didn't want to have to start playing with the parametric EQ on the mic channel that was howling. A feedback destroyer in the insert path would be handy there. I spent one song sweeping the EQ with a narrow cut to try to find the offending frequency. As it was only a backing mic, I just turned it down and got on with the rest of the show.
The clicking noise is still present when the MP3 player is paused (firmware v1.09).
EQ on the FX returns would be a help, even if there is something in the FX unit itself. When the gig is happening, your thought patterns revert to a basic level. To adjust EQ, you would use the channel EQ. Having to start programming the FX units is not something I'd want to do mid-gig.

The 32 channel multitrack recording to Cubase worked with no errors.
I had played with this in a rehearsal and set up a template song, so all I had to do was load it and hit record.
At the end of the first set, I stopped the recording, saved it, and created a new song for the second set.
In the rehearsal I found it more reliable to have the laptop doing the recording set to its internal clock, rather than trying to sync to the desk all the time.
All I need to do now is work out how to play back from the laptop into the desk...

In conclusion, the X32 has simplified my setup considerably. It has also provided some new functions (multitrack recording, P16 monitoring).
Yes, there are a few extra things I'd like the desk to be able to do, but it's nothing that I wouldn't have liked my 01V96 to have been able to have done as well (apart from the vertical pairing; it could do that!). I lived with what the 01V96 could do and I can live with the X32.

Roll on the release of the S16s...!

The only one that works is a very old 1GB stick. Not a complaint, just an observation. It took serveral attempts and an e-mail to Behringer to work that one out...

A quick test could be to record the aes-ebu signal or print to usb and then listen on a computer.
This way you can determine if it's the monitor section that pick up some noice in the analog domain and if it affects the mains and/or recording.

Try formatting the usb drive fully and not just by doing a Quick format. The files probably need to be right at the root of the drive.

Keep a dedicated usb drive for updates?
