cracling noise on recording and playback

Listened to some tracks I recorded the other day and it turns out there is a loud cracle on all channels. Recorded via usb in Reaper at 44.1 kHz with the card in a 16/16 configuration. I had gone with 16/16 because 32/32 was heavily distorted, and everything looked fine when I did a quick sine wave test and inspected a small portion of the waveform that was recorded. Didn't think to actually listen, then I guess I would have caught it earlier. So now I tried various buffer settings, but same result, it crackles. Same with playback of a good file, it crackles. Tested two computers, same result. The sound is ok as such but lots of crackling noise.
I had the console connected via firewire at home trying out a couple of things and everything seemed fine, so I'm not suspecting the card yet.
Any suggestions to what I might be doing wrong?

Thanks, but as far as I can tell, that only does it as far as Windows is concerned. I saved a scene out to Windows, applied the read-only attribute in Properties, brought it back into XControl, and I could still make changes and overwrite the scene in XControl.

What does "M/C depends on Main L/R" mean?

Only having XControl, and no actual X32, makes it difficult to know how some things work, without being able to send a signal. So I'm wondering, does "M/C depends on Main L/R" just mean that the L/R is sent to the M/C post-fader, or does it mean that the M/C level is controlled by the L/R fader, like a DCA, no matter what signal is going to the M/C?

If that were the case I would be delighted, as I could put my subs through the M/C, and have them track the main L/R.

i will find out tomorrow as I'm quite curious myself. We're running the m/c as the sub send but it isnt auto tracking to the l/r master. Would be cool if it did.

HELLO

That is exactly the way it works - I drive my subs with that. The M/C fader does not physically follow L/R so you can adjust the balance between those two to your liking AND control overall level with just L/R.

I'd try to record main bus to both computer and usb-stick at the same time.

If the console is healthy then the usb-stick should show no signs of noise.

Have you verified that the noise is recorded and not something that only shows at playback?

If it's recorded noise, check if the noise is coming down on all tracks at the exact same time.

Those are the steps I'd start with to narrow the issue down...

Per I found the same issue and to fix it, I simply reduced the levels - it seemed to clear it all up...
I'm not sure if I reduced the reaper fader levels or the x32 or both, I'm thinking it was the faders in reaper....
 
Slightly off-topic - X32 & Midas Venice F32 together

Hello

i have X32 and simply love it8)~8-)~:cool:

my friend, who is VERY much analog-oriented tried it out on few gigs and stated, that if he ever was going to buy a digital desk, then X32 would have a good change.

Now he has laid his eyes on Midas Venice F32 and knowing I have two S16 coming he asked me, if we could do following:

- We would set my X32 as monitor-mixer and connect all mics and amps into that.

- Then we would use cat5 and put two S16 on main mixer - his Midas


And now the actual question: Is there a way to have 32 mics out on s16 ADAT to put it in ADAT-FiWi-converter? Or better yet - is there a way to have AES50 talk directly to FiWi?

Everything is clean except what travels on usb between X32 and computer. The crackle is synced to within a couple of samples. It is recorded, I can see it, and I discovered it when playing back on the computer without the X32. Playing back a good file any other way than through the usb card interface is perfectly clean.

Levels doesn't seem to make much difference, but I will check further by lowering it enough to take a few more bits out of the equation (had it around -30dB which is 5 bits)

Ok, next step would be to change the sample rate of the console and see how the noise is affected.

Double check that the samplerate at the computer is in sync. Don't trust xcontrol samplerate status. I've encountered a couple of times where it didn't show the correct rate.

Is there any difference between fiwi and usb? They are using different drivers so this could indicate if it's a driver problem.

I have encountered a few times in the past that if interface buffers were set too low OR TOO HIGH it could cause audible
distortion and I had to find the sweet spot.

There are some FiWi soundcards with ADAT input, like the Presonus Lightpipe. However, the interface expects a computer in the other end of the cable, and so does the console. You would probably have to go through a computer to get the signals into the Venice.
The cheapest AES50-FiWi converter I know of is called X32 and is made by Behringer ;)~;-)~:wink:
