X32 Discussion

Re: How to do an analog insert?

If you were only doing 8 channels of automixer whats the downside of assigning 8 individual post fader auxes to the ins on the dugan and return the returns to another set of channels and unassign the outs of the channels that you are feeding the dugan from and use the inserts as your feeds to L,R or a buss with an onboard eq inserted into. Scenario below:
Wireless Lav 1 post fader Aux 1 unassign outputs so the out is ONLY going to the input of the Dugan
Wireless Lav 2 post fader Aux 2.....

Return output 1 of the dugan to channel 9 and assign it as it was an input from the mic but push the fader to unity as your not going to see signal to this input unless the fader to mic one is pushed up as the feed to the Dugan is POST fader.

Do you see where I'm going with this. You could simplify the visual on this by returning the Dugan inputs to the second layer inputs 17-24

The downside I see is that you are using up so much of the console's resources. Eight auxes! I wouldn't have enough left to do all the other things I need on your average corporate show. But you are correct, and indeed the returns could all be buried on a lower layer and be forgotten about.

Remote Assignable Controls - Pan?

I'm setting up my X32 for use with Sonar (with V1.13) and would like to use one of the assignable rotaries controls for selected channel pan.

I'm using one of the rotaries for jog, but I can't see anything about pan.

Is this possible?

There is the Panorama, but only for specified channels. I think we can add a request to Behringer right now: Give us the option to select "Selected channel" in the Channel/Bus selection window.

First X32 "crash"

I was playing a bunch of wave files (about 10) copied from my PC to a USB drive when there were a couple of issues. These were my own wave files from Ableton Live.

First some stuttering in two or three of these wave files during playback and one refusing to play at all.

Second the X32 hung up (froze) completely as I was trying to change files using the select knob as the previous file was still playing (did this after two or three files played right through).

I had to switch off as nothing would respond.

Possibly I should have stopped one wave file before changing to another - I was just searching for a few that I wanted to use - but maybe this is a just a small glitch in the X32 OS?

Anyway I just think its worth mentioning.

Re: X32 Dormant

Hey guys, we've got a power outage since last week Wednesday and it's still off, I can not play with my desk in the studio or at Church  and I haven't even loaded 1.13 yet, has anyone tried the new OS with Sonar ( Mackie Control ) ????

Thanx
Andre

Re: Remote Assignable Controls - Pan?

Found the pan control.8)~8-)~

Encoder->Remote->Parameter->1

Some of the others also controlled the pan, but I couldn't find out what the others are for.

Still, I'm happy now.

Found a Bug v1.12

Maybe not a "bug" but certainly a shocker!

1. Solo channel
2. Set compressor "Key" to a low frequency value (sub 70Hz)
3. Adjust Key value up/down while listening in headphones
4. Note extremely loud DC offset in the headphones accompanied by full scale M/C Solo meter level.
5.
6.
7.
8.....Change undergarments.

There was no popping through anything but HP. Perhaps Behringer can issue a mute to the HP output during the key change?

Alternte mode for group mutes

I'd like to suggest an alternate mode for group mutes. Instead of having each group mute button mute a group of channels, have it un-mute a group of channels. (Think Yamaha "ON") That way when you press two or more "group mute" buttons you are un-muteing additional channels. Done this way when a muted channel is a member of two or mute groups it will become active if either group is selected. This is a lot more useful in live musical theater vs the way it is now which I cosider almost useless. I suggest doing this as an option in the group mutes setup so that the folks who like the traditional way can have their cake and I can eat it too!

question about Library

I'm sure this was covered before, and I searched the Behringer forum, and can't post there yet... regarding Library. Do I understand correctly that you can save a "profile" of each channel, and recall it... For instance, I have two different female singers that use the same mic / channel on different dates (rotate), and they have very different EQ settings, etc. Can I save each "profile" in the library and recall it into a scene? Or is it best to just save the whole scene?
Another example: Today= song A, operating in scene 04, Ch 11, singer AP. Save Scene as 04, Ch 11, singer AP in library. Next week = again song A, again Scene 04 (recalled), Ch11 again, singer PR (recall from library). I want to save AP and PR as "profiles" in the library and recall them into a scene 04 on different weeks...

I won't be able to look at my console until tomorrow night, so I was wanting a heads up if I am understanding it correctly..

another way to do effects

We ran into another interesting way to apply effects the other day. For instance, we have the effects "Mains" on DCAs, The sends and returns are in the usual places on bus 13-16. If you like to run different levels of the same effects on each vocalist, (i.e. more reverb on background, etc.) instead of having to drill down to the returns to adjust, set the DCAs to unity, leave returns down. Select channel and use the encoders 13-16 to adjust the effects levels from the same layer for each vocalist / channel. You can see the levels on the right side of the screen in a bar (we also do our monitors this way in bus1-10) I'm finding out that there usually is about four different ways to do anything on this board...

Some of you probably already know this, but as a newbie, it was an ah-ha! for me, anyway...

If you have enough free channels you can assign the same input to two channels one for singer AP, one for PR. You just have to unmute the desired channel for the singer who is present that day.

I don't have any extra channels on that layer, and I want to keep it in the same group. I want the same mic, channel, etc. just want to be able to recall the different parameters for each vocalist. We don't have other mics to use either. This is our main vocal mic. A Beta 87A wireless.

Hi Nick,
Yes, the Preset Libraries do allow you to save/recall channel strip presets as you describe.
These presets can include the whole channel strip, or just certain parts of it such as EQ or dynamics.
You can save up to 100 of these presets at a time on the X32, and save/recall them from your USB Flash drive using the USB RECORDER port.
There are also preset libraries for FX and Routing, each with 100 slots of their own.

You don't need two mics. You can assign the same input, and therefore mic, to two channels. A digital Y-cord.
But as John says, yes you can do what you want in a better way with channel presets.

Console Replacement Complete

The replacement for the console with the overall elevated noise floor arrived a few days ago, and works just fine. It came with 1.08 on it, as did all the other consoles, which makes me think that Starin got a HUGE shipment a couple months ago and is still shipping from that batch. It also has the noise on the monitor outputs, but the main analog outs are fine.

The old one should have arrived in Las Vegas by now, so it will be interesting to see what they find, if they're willing to report it.

Thanks, Starin and Behringer!

PS: It's interesting that the console happily loaded 1.13 from a 64 Gig drive, so whatever limitation there used to be on drive size seems to be completely eliminated. Thanks for that, too!

Suggestions for 2.0

Here are a few suggestions, with reasons why:

1) When linking two channels, they automatically pan full left and right. When unlinking those channels, the pans stay left and right. They should go back to the middle.

2) I'd like to see a steeper high pass filter on the mix busses, same as on the inputs. I like to use more of a brick wall to keep gack out of speakers that can't handle it.

3) The narrow end of the Q range is not narrow enough on the parametric EQ, particularly on mix busses. When looking for feedback, a scalpel is better than an axe. The BSS Omnidrives had .05 octave as it's narrowest setting, which seemed right for surgical work.

4) Also regarding Q, it should be labeled in octaves rather than a number from .5 to 10. As someone who works with music, I have an idea of what an octave means, regardless of frequency, and have little idea or have forgotten what the Q numbers mean. Looking in the manual just now yields nothing, and I am too stupid to relate the Wikipedia article about "Q factor"

Q factor - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

to audio.

5) Also in the EQ section, Mode change (particularly in the High and Low buttons) should be done by simultaneously pushing two buttons (High/Low and Mode), rather than by simply pressing Mode. The way it is now, it's easy to either do the wrong thing or go past where you wanted to go, and have to toggle through all modes (no going backwards). That is not a disaster on the mid-frequency buttons, where the only options are PEQ or VEQ, but on High and Low you are forced to go through High Pass or Low Pass, each of which drastically changes the sound even when momentarily engaged. For that matter, why is there a High Pass on the Low button when there is a separate High Pass encoder on each input?

6) Lastly for now, the mono bus send encoder on each channel has unity at maximum, similar to the Monitor pot. When using that bus as a subwoofer send, it would be nicer to have unity at 2:00 or thereabouts, so there is a way to have more sub than unity gain on some inputs. It might also be nice to be able to do a "Sends on Fader" for the mono bus, although without a select button it's hard to imagine how that could be implemented. Yes, you could use a Mix Bus, but the dedicated encoder on each channel and the dedicated Master fader are RIGHT THERE and wanting to be used...

Thanks for listening, and for continuing to make a good console even better.

MIDI Footswitch

Has anyone managed to control the desk using a MIDI footswitch?

I use the desk in a band I also play bass in (no one else mixes us or uses the desk).
I'd really like to be able to mute effects, set tap delays etc. using a MIDI footswitch but haven't seen this mentioned anywhere apart from in a diagram in the manual.

I don't have a footswitch to test with & don't want to buy one if it won't work as I would like it to.

You've got it. Recall the Scene, then recall the saved Channels from the Library.

We have 12 different vocalists. Three on stage at any given time (using three mics). We load up the scene, which has "default" settings for those three Channels. Then, we recall their individual settings from the Library into the three Channels.

One additional item... When you recall a Channel from the Library, it loads into whatever Channel is currently selected. For example, even if the original "save" was from Channel 11, you can recall it into Channel 12.

Is there a complete listing of what the different selections in "Recall Scope" cover? I was a bit surprised that when I tried recalling from the library that recalling "configuration" for a channel didn't recall everything under the "Home/Config" screen, specifically the source routing. (Not sad, mind you, just surprised.)

Behringer, details like this would be great to include in the manual.
