X32 Discussion

Re: X32 Discussion

Hard to say, the speakers are still vaporware.

I've seen a few posts wondering if/when certain products are coming and I thought I might be able to contribute with this link.

Behringer Portal :: Starin Distributing

It would seem that there is 2 relevant dates to note, around the 18th of September and the 18th of March is when they seem seem to be getting it some interesting stock.

(X32's small brothers along with the DJ range of gear, Studio Monitors and.. relevant to this reply, the IQ speakers along with the Flybars for the Mini Line Array rig which were announced last year)

Website says it is accurate as of 20th of Feb 2013.

Note: As was evidenced by this forum, shipping dates don't mean much, a lot of the time, just thought I'd share anyway.
Note 2: Check our the CSV and Excel files, there is some small discrepancies between the dates. Make what you will of that.

Hi

Just getting to grips with my X32 and this is probably a simple question but I can't see how to create a mono output whose level is controlled by main fader. Any Ideas?

Thanks

Dear Phil,

The MAIN L/R fader is dedicated to the MAIN L/R buss. If you want the MAIN L/R fader to control a MONO mix I would suggest routing everything to MAIN L and utilize MAIN L as a MONO bus.

In setup - global - Link Preferences - M/C depends on Main L/R
In ROUTING - analog out - select the output you're routing to and select Output Signal - Main C/M
Then you need to either turn on and turn up the Mono in Home - main for each channel you want to get mono sound from, or send each channel to a subgroup and send mono from the main - Mono in that subgroup. (if I remeber correctly)

However, if you merely want a mono signal from the main stereo, you can send from LR to a matrix channel. Use a single matrix channel that isn't linked, route it to an analog output and turn up the send for that matrix for Main LR in Home - sends.

If you have an available matrix, I think this is the easiest way.

You don't have to touch the matrix when mixing - just leave it at unity. The Main fader will drive it.

(Nor are there any changes needed on the Channels or Buses.)

Re: Pricing Of X32 in Australia

Can someone perhaps from Behringer explain this too me please ?

How is it that I can purchase an X32 from well respected legit Behringer dealers in the USA and have the unit shipped to me here in Australia for hundreds of dollars cheaper than we can get it from a Behringer Dealer in Australia ? Given the higher Australian Dollar versus the American Dollar it just doesn't make any sense.

Are we being ripped off by the dealer network here in Oz ?

Re: X32 Discussion

Hi, long time reader, sixth time poster! :D

I've been reading alot of these forumpages about the X32, and I'm really excited to bring it home today!

We've been using a Yamaha 02R before in my band, with external Behringer EQ's (something like FBQ6200) with feedback destroyer/detector for each monitor.
Is there something similiar in the X32 so we can throw out these EQ's from the 19" rack? Feedback destroyer/detector would be great in the internal X32 EQ!

And is there any difference in output between those mixers? I read somewhere here to gain the X32 channels to -18dB?

Where would you connect the monitors, AUX sends or XLR outputs?

What about import duties and taxes? If I import something from the usa, I not only pay the product, but the extra bill for import does come afterwards...

Welcome to Australia with a 3 tier distribution system.

in the USA and Europe behringer have offices and warehouses and the dealers buy direct from behringer.
In Australia and other places a distributor buys from behringer, takes the risks, pays the duties, does the advertising etc. for that they add 30-50% based on what the market will bear. Dealers then buy at basically the same price as the US end user and they put on another 30-50% so their families can eat.

before galactic music took over sole distribution we had multiple import streams and some importers were selling the products online cheaper that what I as a dealer could buy it.

there are still some available at less than dealer price ( around $3500) if you look around.

I wouldn't use a feedback destroyer 8O~8-O~ on monitor outputs, but each there own...
Yes you have good 6 band parametric eq's on bus/aux outputs, so no really a need for external. Also If you're really think you need a graphic eq, you have them available as a FX insert.

-18dB is compared to 0dBFS that means 18 dB below the absolute maximum level.
0dB on a analog desk is mostly about +4dBu, with a headroom of about 20dB or more.
Short story, -18dB on the X32 is comparable to odB on an analog desk.
No need to go higher because of signal to noise ratio...

I would connect monitors to XLR outputs, but aux output is also possible.

So there is no feedback analyzer on the X32 Equalizer? I remember on those external EQ's you could see what frequency caused the feedback, very handy!

Maybe I am stupid, but isn't the only important thing to avoid getting over 0dBFS on the main out's? To keep the signal at -18dBFS is just to get 18dB headroom when you sum the channels at the master fader?

No, no no. DO NOT run input trim so the signal peaks much above -18DBFS... unless you want to run your master faders around -40. It's about what happens downstream of the mixer, as well. Every device has the potential to add gain (equalizers, compressors, system processors) and amplifiers have the sole job of adding gain.

It is not necessary to use every available bit in a 24 bit digital word (least significant bits are routinely discarded or masked in processing) in order to get an acceptable S/N ratio and no PA system benefit is derived from doing so.

Yes you have good 6 band parametric eq's on bus/aux outputs, so no really a need for external.

A feedback destroyer is just an automatic parametric EQ, with a Q up to around 1/80 of an octave. The higher available Q's are very effective for feedback control.

The Q on the parametric EQ's of the X32 is roughly 1/6 to 1/8 of an octave – which is not very effective for feedback control.

The Q on a 31-band EQ is 1/3 of an octave - also not very effective for feedback control.

I'd like to avoid the entire mic placement/choice and monitor placement/choice discussion. Spoken word on an omni-directional mic along with a wedge, pushes the envelope of feedback. With a high-Q PEQ, that can be tamed. (Be it manual or automatic, that's another discussion.)

Bottom line: 1/8 and 1/3 of an octave EQ's are not very effective for feedback control. It's a hatchet, when all you need is a fine knife.

It would be nice to see a high-Q PEQ in the Effects Library. I could run monitors for visiting speakers, something I can’t do now.

To be honest that was the ONE thing I had not considered. I had factored in the 10%gst we have, so I rang Customs today and gave them some figures. On the basis of the costs I was given for the X32, shipping, customs duty and GST it works out that I am $87 better off to buy it here in Australia

So there you go, I WAS WRONG :-)

I have already purchased 1 a few months back and love it, but when I started to see all these much cheaper offers direct from the US that was what got me wondering.

X32 for Installed/Commercial Sound

Dear all,

since the introduction of the X32 Rack and Core models, we have received tremendous feedback from contractors and installed/commercial sound customers who asked for accessories.

Today I am reaching out to understand what you would like us to offer in terms of expansion cards, break-out boxes, accessories etc, and even application-specific iPad apps. We are also considering to open up the system and invite 3[SUP]rd[/SUP] party app developers to design customized app’s so we can dramatically expand the X32 system beyond the current iPad remote control version.

Since the X32 is a very powerful mix-engine, it can be used both as fixed matrix mixer but even potentially as an open architecture mixer with new firmware.

We’re also currently looking into developing real-time, low-latency distribution network solutions with up to 160 channels over Cat5.

As usual, your input is highly appreciated.

Warm regards

Uli

I would like to have a dedicated console, 19" format for dj purpose. Could be a remote only that can be connected to a x32 rack.
Important for me are PFL buttons, pan/bal knob, eq knobs above all faders (Could be three band gain only)
START buttons!!!! (For cd players etc. with a relay output) on all faders. These should preferable also be configurable as MUTE button in case of mic inputs...
For me a crossfader isn't preferred!
Scribble lcd's are a nice to have.

All other settings can be controlled on the rack or ipad. :)

But maybe there is no market for this, so I have to build it myself one day...

Re: X32 for Installed/Commercial Sound

Uli,
by opening up the system, are you referring to making the internal protocols and programming interface available/documented with access to the source code of the current or basic firmware?
Would be great, particularly if there are any serious developers out there with the resources and ability to produce plugins and upgrades at a reasonable price. Obviously the Rack and Core have the potential to be refirmwared to be anything from automated mixers to line array processors, particularly if the line array comes with Ultranet or AES50 interfaces. The Rack can be used to expand the X32 processing power, etc.

While it was clearly stated last fall that the OSC documentation was provided as is and that no user support would be available, I believe that for the sake of making the product attractive for development of software applications that might in turn make the actual hardware product more attractive for some applications, some effort should be spent on extending the OSC-documentation to at least cover every feature of the OSC-implementation.

Expansions to tie in with currently popular protocols are apparently in some demand, but I can't help thinking that the AES50 in most respects is able to fulfill the integration needs of products in the X32 family, and what is somewhat lacking is the software/firmware tools of the integration itself.
What we need to be able to realize the potential of the X32 family is ability to fully remote control a Rack or Core from a console, ability to cascade into buses via AES50, ability to add remote layers to the X32 to control Rack and Core in a cascading situation, etc. I believe the hardware that is already announced in most respects cover the needs, we just need the (firmware)tools to utilize the capabilities.

Integrators and installers are no doubt often in need of hardware to enable tie-in with existing AES/EBU, S/PDIF, TDIF, ADAT so it would make sense to provide that.

The rest of us that don't work with installations except maybe our own, are of course eagerly awaiting the direct recording card and are hoping it will have capacity beyond the hinted at 24 channels.

As a contractor and consultant, there are a few things that I would like to see from the X32 in future development.

1. Gain-sharing automixing.

2. AES50 router (not X32 hardware, but a separate device) for allowing multiple AES50 connections in a "star" configuration rather than "daisy-chained". Some form of POE powering scheme from the router would be great and enable the next two things...

3. Small channel (4-8) mic pre input circuit boards with euroblock connections, and AES50 input and output. This would be powered from the POE router above. Ideally, they could be daisy-chained to build custom input panels in blocks of 4 channels. Probably needs to be housed in a small enclosure that can easily be attached to other things. Also needs to be pretty inexpensive.

4. The same as #3 above except with analog line outputs rather than inputs. For driving amp racks.

5. Low, low low latency between the AES50 I/O on the X32 and the potential Dante card I/O.

There are many, many other things that I'd like to see, but these things would get the ball rolling.

Thanks and bravo for the X32 range!

Chris

Re: X32 for Installed/Commercial Sound

Plus one for this : "outputs for driving amp racks".

Can be a single rack mount with 8 outputs and AES50 in/out (on the back of the unit) - network connection confirmation indication led on the front, maybe mute buttons would be a bonus.

Also it would be nice to kick the X32 rack into a "S16 - snake head only mode" - so that the gain is only controlled by an attached X32.

Also maybe be off topic, but an X32 surface to control an X32 Rack would be welcome.

Thanks
