X32 Discussion

Re: X32 Discussion

I spoke to our development team about the P16 ULTRANET protocol and can share the following:
(in regards to accidentally plugging ULTRANET, AES50 or different combinations of X32/P16/S16 CAT-5 connections)
There is no problem or risk of damage plugging the wrong signal on any of our X32 Cat5 ports. Outputs are buffered and inputs have transformer balancing.

Thinking about the text: Outputs are buffered and inputs have transformer balancing.

How sensitive are AES50 to disturbance?
How should you power X32 at FOH and S16 on stage if they are far apart?

A power cable between X32 and S16?
Or using a power outlet near FOH for X32 and power S16 from stage?

Re: X32 Discussion

Revisiting the UPS discussion, I received an Eaton 3S a while ago and have been trying to provoke a glitch. Allthough this is not a constant conversion model, it is apparently rapid enough not to disturb the X32. I haven't actually tested with gooseneck light, all lights blaring, all channels maxed, all outputs loaded and phantom load on all inputs, so I can't vouch for an absolute maximum load situation that might drain the caps a little faster, but so far it seems just the ticket. It fits inside the standard case for transportation, it costs a pittance and apparently it does what it is supposed to, so it gets a thumbs up from me.

I see now that the S16 is listed at Thomann to arrive 17.12.2012 and at Musicstore even later, so I guess we're looking at late x-mas this year unless that is second batches being listed.

Dear Jörgen,

This shouldn't be anything to worry about with AES50. You should be able to connect the X32 to power near FOH, while the S16 is connected to stage power, even if they are different circuits without issue.

Re: X32 Discussion

Hi guys, thanks for the help.

I actually went out and bought the Airmac Express and got it working somehow using the Airport Utility app on my iPad.
There are so many options in the iPad version of the Airport Utility app I would love to know for sure the do's and don'ts if anyone can point me in the right direction.

From what I've read people are saying to make a static IP and and hard code my devices, still trying to get my head around it all.
Is this what others are doing?

Going from venue to venue is there any problems with this wi-fi setup I could come across? just so I know beforehand.

Craig.

Dear Craig,

Check out this video on the BEHRINGER YouTube channel.

Re: X32 discussion

Hey Joe / Chris,

Has anyone tested the X32 with the Klark Teknik DN9650? That would let the studio guys use an external clock for less than $1K, and also allow 1:1 channel repatching, right? I suppose since the DN9650 only has outputs other than AES50, any thought to make an AES50 output module?

Can't wait to see the iphone app! Also, any chance to swap the positions of the ducker/expander? I sure do need to use that expander and comp together to clean up noisy sources like guitar amps for live use!

Thanks!

Re: X32 discussion

Hello Joe,

I'm using the X32 for about two weeks now. It is a great board which is working fine - when I'm using it without a computer. When I'm using it with my Cubase 64-Bit I've got strange driver-problems. Here some details about my computer:

Windows 7 64-Bit (German) with all updates (at least it should have all )
Steinberg Cubase 6.0.7 64-Bit
Behringer X32 Archwave Driver v5.25 (both Firewire and USB)
Behringer X32 with Firmware v1.09 (it had v1.02 on delivery)
Intel Core i7 processor
NEC Firewire-Card (PCI) or VIA Card (onboard) [Windows 7 delivers "NEW" and "OLD" firewire drivers. I've tested both]

some background:
I'm using digital recording-interfaces for several years - so I'm not completely new to this. I've used a TASCAM US1641 (USB) and two Alesis MultiMix 16 Firewire for recording with Cubase 4 and Cubase 6 (the Alesis were daisy-chained to record 32 channels). I've never had problems with the drivers even at very low latency. So my computer-setup should be OK.

Problem with Firewire:
The first time I've connected the X32 by Firewire. I've got a good signal input but suddenly I've received strange noise on top of the signal. I've made a recording of this: you can download the file from here, because I'm not allowed to attache ZIP-files or MP3s here: noisyrecording. I had to increase the buffer-size to 40ms for each Input and Output - so I had 80ms turnaround-latency - but the noise is not the standard clicking, when the latency is too low so that the computer cannot manage it - it sounds like the board and the XUF has slightly different samplerates. OK, with this high latency it seems to work most of the time, but sometimes I have to change the buffersize several times to get the Firewire connection working. I've tried the firewire connection with an old Pentium M Notebook and everything was working - so it seems to be a problem with the 64-bit driver? I've tested with 32 in/32 out, 32 in / 8 out - same problem.

In the old(!) behringer-forum someone has written about the problem I've figured out with firewire, too. He had this after flashing firmware version 1.09. Is this possible? Is this a known problem and is someone working on it? Can I help you in some way?

Problem with USB:
Then I've tried the USB-Connection. Here the latency can be much lower, but sometimes I've got strange readings within Cubase in the field "Clock source" (please have a look at the attached pictures). But the board was working. Strange, but OK if it is working, but: yesterday I tried to record our band but suddenly cubase showed me 64 inputs instead of 32. The Archwave drivers seems to be able to manage multiple X32, but here the driver seemed not to reset the list. I did not have time to check everything - I simple rerouted the cubase-inputs to input 33 to 64 and it worked, but this is not a solution.

Some pictures of my setup (sorry for the german text):

Here with strange characters within the field "Clock source". The characters (here "t - g") are changing if I change something within the driver-dialog:
usbproblem.png

and suddenly here it is working ("Computer" as Clock-Source) - until I change something in the setup-dialog of the driver:
correct.png

and here some pictures of the 64-inputs. As you can see, the clock-source is now "( - i":
double_ins_and_outs1.pngdouble_ins_and_outs2.png

Minor Issue with XControl:
I'm from Germany and I'm using a german character within my username. XControl starts with "IO ERROR" because it cannot access my home-directory which is name with a german "ö". I've solved this by creating a new username with only US-characters, but maybe it is easy to fix this for the next release :)

Issue with Latency-Compensation on Cubase:
On dub-recording I've figured out some problems with the latency-correction. Cubase automatically corrects the latency of the recorded material and moves the recorded audio on the timeline. For this Cubase takes the transmitted latency-information of the driver. I recorded some audio with lower latency, but Cubase moved the audio to much to the left, so it "over"-compensates the recorded audio. Maybe this problem is related to the problems above? I used the USB-connection for recording.

Thank you very much for any help!

kind regards,
Chris

PS: in the new behringer forum someone posted a problem about the 64-bit firewire-drivers, too. Maybe it is related to my problem? Here is the link: Firewire-Problem

Hi Christian

That's the EXACT symptom I am now getting too! Thanks for recording it - I'll get the recording to the guys here in Australia.

Re: X32 discussion

Hi i'm new here.
Excellent thread- keep on sharing info :)
I'ld like to share my experience with the x32 after running 3 gigs with it- IT'S FREAKING AWESOME!
Out of the box- idiot proof- easy to understand and operate.
I also multitracked every show to a pc laptop running Studio One 32/32 via usb. Why? bescause i can :) I love the 'virtual soundcheck' concept. Ran flawlessly- mic pre's sound warm and clear- no need to have a 'post processing' tap point in my opinion. I always record 'flat'. just preamp.
It's kinda amazing how much power and versatility they (B guys) managed to pack into such a small and affordable-to-all digital board!
After working for many years on analog mixers- I'm now trying all digital.
Yamaha's are ok'ish (btw- M7cl and PM5d- both also have that "zipper noise" when dialing the gain)
Did a show last month in LA on the amazing Midas Pro2- its great but expensive, not 'newbie friendly' and my lead singer thought that the x32's reverb sounds better :)
Can't wait to see what comes with next firmware updates- de-esser (located @ gate knob imo) and multiband compression would be sweet.
Most urgent to me: Graphic EQ's on the iPad app.

One problem I encountered was a phase problem when sending same audio to a matrix via mains and mix busses.

Here is a description of the problem:
My goal was: to record from stereo matrix out, feeding from mains LR plus adding individual contributions to stereo aux bus 9-10 (Post fader)
My problem was: when adding things to aux 9-10, it sounds
'out of phase' with whats coming from the mains LR feed to that matrix. Maybe that's because of the graphic EQ i have inserted on the mains?
My solution was: routing all my inputs+fx+aux returns channels to stereo group bus 11-12 and send that to the matrix (instead of sending from main LR) plus adding stuff to aux 9-10.
That worked and sounded great.
The downside: wasting another pair of mix busses in the process.
Any advice? another workaround?

Cheers.

The insert of any effect will add 0.7ms of latency to the channel, giving you a null at 714 hz and phase issues. I don't think there is a workaround other than avoiding mixing processed and unprocessed sources.
Maybe the development team could give us a 0.7ms dummy insert that wouldn't count towards the fx limitation?

and it's worth pointing out that nearly all digital consoles have this issue to some degree. processing takes time and time=latency. the Midas digital consoles have an entire scheme for managing latency. who knows, perhaps some of that will trickle down to us... here's hoping.

Re: X32 discussion - Some pictures !

Hello Everyone !

Please find some pictures of my last event, I usually never do monitors, for this event, I wanted to try the X32 in Monitor mix situation, it was pretty fine !! Next show will be 4 rock bands in a large club, will see how the vertec and the x32 get along !

iPad and WiFi

Anyone else using an Apple Airport for wifi connection with the iPad app? ..

My network seems flaky and drops of more than not.

Hello

I had the same problem, although I had set everything up as in manual....

my friend, who is very good at computers looked at it and immediately noticed, that my Airport was sharing the same IP as the iPad or X32 - can´t remember which. So he adressed all Three units with different IP.s and it has been working wonderfully ever since.

I take my iPad home and work, and there are two WiFi-internet networks, where I connect regularly. Upon returning to X32 I just select that network from iPad and away I go again.

i think this should really be in the manual for us "dummies" - in all engineering there are some things, that are obvious as breathing to those regularly involved. Then for us, who ned it only seldom, it becomes a nightmare - I had two weeks of very dissapointed feeling about remote-control, but now I feel comfortable.

Digidesign calls that "delay compensation" and is designed to address this exact problem. It's not automatic, though, as it adds a bit of additional latency in the signal path. I think Midas implements this, too. Going back to my comment about how corporate decisions are made regarding features, this is something that separates the 2 brands and justifies (artificially or not) the price difference between them. Uli may or may not decide to put these kinds of features (it's only software, right?) into the X series... but my bet is that they will not dilute their low-end Midas market with "high end" X series.

Another reason would be that there *might* be a larger X series desk in the works that *might* have an expanded feature set. This model would be the bridge between X and Pro. Mostly, though, my take from comments from Behringer is that the X series will mostly expand downward in size to reach the 12-16 channel users and provide a modest upgrade path. We'll have to wait and see what shows up at Musik Messe.

Good thing you're not making decicions at Behringer ;)~;-)~
While I fully understand where you are coming from, handicapping your low end product when that product is based on commonly available technology will only play into the hands of your competition in the long run. Behringer needs to stay ahead of the competition for the lifespan of the X32 by constantly refining the product. I understand that Behringer might not want to add an expansion card that quadruples the processing power, but as long as the Midas products are superiour in terms of hardware and processing power, Midas will not be hurt. In fact, some people on an upgrading path might find that an X32 plus a Midas stagebox is what they can afford at the moment, thus locking into an upgrade path that will benefit Midas and exclude everyone else. The X32 is competing against the AH GLD80 and new products coming from the likes of Presonus and Mackie, and it will benefit the whole Music Group that the X32 wins and keep winning. To win you strive for excellence, you don't tactically slow down.

Uli, please don't listen to Tim, he might know what he is talking about but we don't approve ;)~;-)~
