X32 Discussion

Re: X32 card MIDI

hmm....interesting. I can not get it working for the life of me. I am trying to get to get Reaper to recognize it, but it is not showing up as a MIDI device. I am running the latest version of Reaper on a macbook. I was able to get my Akai APC40 connected to Reaper so I know MIDI is working with Reaper, its just my X32 is not showing up as a device.

Hi Forrest,
If you are trying to use the Card MIDI for use the DAW control surface features of the X32, checkout our X32 with Reaper Webinar where we walk through the process of setting this up at about the 23:00 mark.
X32 Live! Webinar: X32 & Reaper - YouTube

Perhaps you missed something that you will catch here.
One thing to check is that you are in the right area in preferences in Reaper. You don't want to add the X32 as a MIDI device the way you would an instrument such as your APC40. You have to add a "Mackie Control Universal" Control Surface in the Control Surface section.
I just tested using the USB connection and my MacBook Pro with Reaper and was able to get it going by following the Webinar.

If you need further assistance, please send me a PM.

Re: X32 card MIDI

I just wanted to chime in about how much I am enjoying using the Wave Designer (same functionality as SPL Transient Designer) plugin on the X32. I used several channels of it this weekend on kick, snare, and toms, and it was outstanding. For those of you who have not tried this plugin, you are really missing out, it is amazing - trivially easy to use, and a fantastic creative tool.\

Here's an intro video that talks fairly generically about using transient shaping tools, not X32 specific, but showing what can be done.

Re: X32 sounds harsh?

How do you know that all you are hearing is the preamp? Did you physically/electrically remove it from the rest of mixer or circuitry?
You can not remove the circuitry :-) it's a DSP...
What I mean : no EQ, FX or whatever at all from input to output.
And I never liked with EQ response on the 01V96... but in that era, it was the best what we could have.

One of my favorites so far...partly because it has 3 knobs and partly because it sounds good.

Behringer X32 road test | Audio Times

I've seen it being mentioned a few times that the x32 sounds thin and harsh.

Speaking of the conditions of that linked review, I have to disagree (strongly). As someone who has personally owned and mixed on both the SC48 and X32, I have not noticed any appreciable sonic lackings in the X32 that make it anywhere as inferior to the SC48 sonically as that reviewer claims. In fact, having owned both I would be very hesitant to say with certainty that the SC48 sounds better - I have not observed that, and believe that my perception may also be too affected by the cost difference, and the name on the desk.

I expect that workflow differences might have created a different perceived end result, but do not believe that there is anything about the X32 that makes it unacceptable sonically. It is just fine!

I personally find the X32 great to work on, and do not feel restricted by its sonic capabilities at all (waiting eagerly for more plugins though!). I would suggest for anyone who is concerned that any modern mixing console is lacking in sonic quality - spend time carefully thinking about the talent/source material, the microphones and their placement, the speakers, the room acoustics, etc. There is much more to gain there than in obsessing about relatively minor differences between things like preamps and related bits.

<begin rant> IMHO there is too much craze about preamps, converters etc. I suppose it is the manufacturers looking for ways to gain a perceived edge with the customer.... A good preamp is important, but realistically, most preamps are pretty good these days, perfectly usable. Even the "character" preamps loved in studios (ie API, Neve, etc) have fairly subtle differences - to the point where if you move a microphone an inch in one direction you could have more resultant effect on the sound than switching the preamp has. <end rant>

Sounds good to hear that my hearing isn't at loss (yet).

As I said, this wasn't the first time I've heard this comment so it made me begin to wonder. The only common denominator is that none of the posters claiming this owned a x32 and had only used it for a quick run-down.

I would also first suspect workflow differences and/or location setup tuned for/with the other components.

As someone else noted, why mention 101dB SPL when talking about a mixer. And why did the writer of this specific article I linked try to make the foh mix sound good by tweaking the geq, which I assume was inserted on the mains? That would not be the first thing on my list to do in a situation like that...

While on a somewhat related subject. Do most of you x32-tweakers prefer the vintage or the normal parametric eq in general?

X16 (dreamers version)

I was just having a think about what I would love in an X16, and came up with the following.

An 8+9 fader surface similar to the X32
16+8 analogue input panel

That's where the reduction stops. The same brain as the X32, and the same AES inputs. And the same 32-channel control; using a 4x8 fader layout instead of 2x16.

As such, an X16 and an S16 = X32, giving you the same performance in a smaller package. You also have the option to use the X16 as an advanced stage-box for an X32/16 (if you desire) or even as a small FOH mixer controlling a few S16s or even an X32 at side of stage/monitors.

If this hit the market, it would be at the top of my shopping-list.

Hi Guys,

An old friend Matt Glasser, on the East Coast US, sent another pic from an Eve 6 show using his dual X32 rig.

He has done shows this month with the Misfits, Buck Cherry, Eve 6 and Lit!

Very cool - Thanks Matt!

Re: X32 with Eve 6

Hi Brett,

Matt is using one X32 at FOH and one X32 at Monitor Position.

He has 2 S16 stageboxes on order, but in the mean time he is running the stage inputs into the monitor console, then using AES50 as the spit to FOH.

The downside, (until he gets his S16 units), is his preamp gain is at the monitor position.

The bands he is working with tour with their own engineers so he is usually at monitor position and they always do sound check, so it gets the job done for now.

Matt has been extremely pleased with his X32 setup.

Re: Post fader metering

Could Bluetooth for a Keyboard be possible as a card feature? Always thought that would have been nice in original design. I use an iPad myself, but it would be handy for some.
